Questions
Why does the DS-160 reject my photo?
Common causes: the file is over 240 KB, the image is not square, it is smaller than 600 × 600 pixels, or the background is not plain. The first preset fixes size, shape and file size; the background and pose must be right in the original photo.
My file comes out smaller than the minimum. What happens?
Where there is a minimum, the tool first saves at top quality and then adds padding data that image viewers ignore, so the picture is unchanged and the file meets the minimum.
How accurate are these requirements?
Taken from the official notice or government page listed below. Rules can change with each new notice, so compare with the official instructions linked on this page.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so your photo and signature never leave your device. That matters for ID documents.
