Checked 2026-11-02 against Protean's application guidelines (photo up to 20 KB, signature up to 10 KB). Protean's own help article mentions 50 KB; the stricter limits pass both. UTIITSL guides list different values. Always check the portal you use.

    How to use it

    1. Choose Photo or Signature.
    2. Drop the image. The photo is cropped to the right shape; the signature background is cleaned to white.
    3. Download and upload it on the PAN application portal.

Common reasons PAN photos are rejected

The most frequent problems are a file over the size limit, the wrong shape (a full-length photo instead of a passport-style one), and a dark or patterned background. The photo preset crops to the 2.5 × 3.5 cm shape and keeps the file under 20 KB.

For the signature, sign in black or dark blue ink on plain white paper, photograph it in good light, and use the signature preset. It turns the grey paper white and darkens the ink so the signature stays clear after compression.

    Questions

    Is the PAN photo 2.5 × 3.5 cm or 3.5 × 2.5 cm?

It is a portrait photo: 2.5 cm wide and 3.5 cm tall. Some guides write it the other way round, but the shape is the same as a small passport photo.

Can I use the same files for NSDL (Protean) and UTIITSL?

Usually yes, as both list similar sizes. Check the instructions on the portal you are using before uploading.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The resizing runs inside your browser with JavaScript, so the image never leaves your device. Once the page has loaded, resizing keeps working even if you go offline.
