Checked 2026-11-03. Taken from the official notice or government page listed below. The pixel range comes from section 6 ("Image size of photos for online applications") of the INZ guide for photographers, Taking acceptable visa photos. The INZ photo page gives 512 KB to 3.14 MB; the guide gives 500 KB to 3 MB. The presets stay between 512 KB and 3 MB, which meets both. Always check the latest official instructions before submitting.

    Other rules to know

The photo must be natural and unaltered: do not crop your head and shoulders onto a plain background or retouch it. Resizing the whole photo is all the presets do.

No smiling, no head tilt, and no hair over the face.

Only you in the photo, against a plain background.

A business that takes passport photos is the most reliable source, according to INZ.

    Questions

Why does INZ say my photo file is too small?

INZ has a minimum file size of about 500 KB, which a compressed phone photo or a 900 × 1200 crop often falls under. The presets add padding data that image viewers ignore until the file reaches 512 KB, so the picture itself stays the same.

What else makes the INZ upload fail?

A landscape photo instead of portrait, a shape other than 3:4, a face that fills less than 70% or more than 80% of the frame, a smile, or a tilted head. Get the framing right when the photo is taken: stand so your face fills 70 to 80% of a portrait shot. INZ wants the photo natural and unaltered, so use the keep-framing preset, which only resizes the whole photo and sets the file size.

My file comes out smaller than the minimum. What happens?

Where there is a minimum, the tool first saves at top quality and then adds padding data that image viewers ignore, so the picture is unchanged and the file meets the minimum.

    How accurate are these requirements?

Taken from the official notice or government page listed below. Rules can change with each new notice, so compare with the official instructions linked on this page.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your photo and signature stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share a file by link. That matters for ID documents. If your device can't handle an image, the tool can shrink it on our server instead, but only if you agree, and it is deleted right away.
