UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) visa photo: what to upload
Digital photo: At least 600 × 750 px, 50 KB to 6 MB, JPG or JPEG, Plain, light-coloured background. Vertical (portrait). Show head, shoulders and upper body. Not mirrored or flipped.
Other rules to know
The photo must not be the same one that is in your passport or identity card, and must not be a scan or photo of another photo.
Glasses only if you need them: no sunglasses or tinted lenses, and no glare over the eyes.
Children must be alone in the picture. Under 6s do not need a plain expression; babies under 1 can lie on a plain light sheet.
A phone or tablet photo is accepted; GOV.UK says to try to arrange for another person to take it, which reduces the chance of rejection.
Questions
Why was my UK visa photo rejected?
The reasons GOV.UK lists most often trip people up: reusing the photo from your passport, uploading a photo of a printed photo, a front-camera selfie that comes out mirrored, shadows on the face or wall, hair over the eyes, and glare on glasses. File problems are the smaller group: under 600 × 750 pixels, under 50 KB, over 6 MB, or not a JPG.
Is this the same as the UK passport photo?
The rules are close but the file limits differ: passport uploads go up to 10 MB, visa uploads up to 6 MB. Both want head, shoulders and upper body on a plain light background, so the first preset keeps your framing and only changes the file. It does not enlarge or rotate the photo, so start from a portrait photo of at least 600 × 750 pixels.
My file comes out smaller than the minimum. What happens?
Where there is a minimum, the tool first saves at top quality and then adds padding data that image viewers ignore, so the picture is unchanged and the file meets the minimum.
How accurate are these requirements?
Taken from the official notice or government page listed below. Rules can change with each new notice, so compare with the official instructions linked on this page.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so your photo and signature stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share a file by link. That matters for ID documents. If your device can't handle an image, the tool can shrink it on our server instead, but only if you agree, and it is deleted right away.
