Other rules to know
The same pixel and file limits apply to permanent residence applications in the PR Portal and to online PR card applications.
Taken no more than 12 months before you apply, showing how you look now.
Only resize and re-save the photo, as the IRCC photo checker suggests; do not crop around your head, or change colour, brightness or contrast.
The background must be white, not just light: IRCC lists a background that is not white among the reasons a photo is returned.
Questions
The PR Portal photo check gave a warning. Will my application be refused?
Not automatically. IRCC's permanent resident photos page says that even if you get a warning that your photo does not meet requirements, you can submit it anyway, and an officer will review the photo and tell you if you need a new one. Photos IRCC lists as likely to be returned are too dark, not on a white background, hiding facial features, glaring, outside 715 × 1000 to 2000 × 2800 pixels, or over 4 MB.
Can I crop my photo for the PR card?
No. IRCC counts cropping around the head and shoulders, cutting your image onto a white background, and changes to colour, brightness or contrast as altering the photo. When the checker warns about size, it suggests resizing instead. The online preset does only that: it scales the whole photo to fit inside 2000 × 2800 pixels without cutting anything off, so a 3024 × 4032 phone photo becomes 2000 × 2667.
My file comes out smaller than the minimum. What happens?
Where there is a minimum, the tool first saves at top quality and then adds padding data that image viewers ignore, so the picture is unchanged and the file meets the minimum.
How accurate are these requirements?
Taken from the official notice or government page listed below. Rules can change with each new notice, so compare with the official instructions linked on this page.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so your photo and signature stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share a file by link. That matters for ID documents. If your device can't handle an image, the tool can shrink it on our server instead, but only if you agree, and it is deleted right away.
